![]() University of Maryland, College Park Another boring seal? Anyways, it's just the name of the school, the foundation date being split by the center, and a round, spherical version of Maryland's state flag. The eagle is also used on Iowa's state flag, but that eagle is carrying a giant banner with its beak, so I'm under the impression that this is based of the U.S. But clearly the only thing going for the seal is the eagle holding an olive branch in one claw, a bow in the other, and the arrow in the beak. ![]() It's in yellow, which is unique, I guess, and they have a period after the foundation date. University of Iowa Like IU's seal, Iowa's is pretty boring, with not much going on. Now I do like the book in front of the sun, but other than that, this seal feels a bit too corporate for my taste. Everything, from the school's name and foundation date in Roman numerals to the small Latin motto in the middle of the seal (Light and Truth) has the same boring and dull font. What I can complain about is how ugly and basic the sans-serif font looks. Indiana University Bloomington I do not know why they call themselves "Indiana University" instead of "University of Indiana," but I shouldn't complain about that. ![]() Below the motto is a glowing book with "Agriculture, Science & Art" inscribed, with a plow, an anvil, and a thing that looks like a cross between a telegram and a spinning wheel to show that this is a school that holds incredibly true to their blue-collar, land-grant roots. With a rope circling the seal, the font used for the school's name and foundation date, as well as its English motto of "Learning and Labor," look very old-fashioned and Abraham Lincolny (Ignoring the fact that Lincoln was born in Kentucky). Anyway, let's start with a seal for UIUC. University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign In case you haven't realized, no Big Ten school has an official name starting with any letter before "I," so that explains why you're confused about the alphabet. Think of this as a cleaner, more PC version. And yes, this is a repost of the exact same thing, only the previous time, I went a bit too far in comparing Michigan's Latin motto to a No-no German slogan. All of this is my opinion, so my views may differ with you on these seals. Please note that I am not a graphic designer or an artist: I am just an extremely biased college football fan who is bored during the offseason. I am a day early, but honestly, I have done a lot more research on these seals. I created a pattern where I do the conferences alphabetically before doing the schools alphabetically, so we will do the Big Ten today. Welcome back to part 2 of this five-part series, where I go ahead and critique every seal for every Power 5 school.
